On September 28, Yangcheon District in Seoul (District Mayor Lee Gijae) announced that it will provide financial support for traditional Korean medicine infertility treatments for couples struggling with unexplained infertility. In partnership with the Yangcheon District Association of Korean Medicine, the district is currently running the “Traditional Korean Medicine Infertility Treatment Support Project” to help address the low birth rate crisis and alleviate the financial burden on couples facing infertility.
The support covers 90% of the cost of herbal medicine treatment lasting between one and three months, with a maximum of 1.2 million won per person. Recipients of basic livelihood security benefits and those in the next-lowest income bracket are eligible for full coverage of their treatment costs.
The program is open to couples suffering from unexplained infertility who wish to conceive naturally, including those in common-law marriages. The woman must be 45 years old or younger (born on or after January 1, 1980), while there is no age limit for men.
Couples wishing to apply should prepare the necessary documents, such as an infertility diagnosis, blood test results, and ovarian function test results for the woman, and either apply online through the Seoul Pregnancy and Childbirth Information Center website or visit the Community Health Division on the 2nd floor of the annex at Yangcheon District Health Center. Details such as designated Korean medicine clinics can be found on the Yangcheon District Health Center website.
Yangcheon District expects this initiative to improve reproductive health for women with infertility, reduce the financial burden on couples, and increase pregnancy success rates.
Lee Gijae, Mayor of Yangcheon District, stated, “By supporting traditional Korean medicine infertility treatment, we aim to help promote healthy pregnancies and childbirths and make a practical contribution to increasing the birth rate. We will continue to actively develop effective birth support policies to make Yangcheon a district where it is easy to have and raise children.”
