This program was designed to raise awareness of auctions, which are a core pillar of the art market, and the auctioneers who lead them, while also making auctions more accessible to the public. It also reflects the rapidly growing demand and interest in auctions among institutions and corporations, in line with the recent expansion of Korea's art culture and the growth of the market.
The "Auctioneer Course" consists of a three-stage curriculum that covers everything from auction theory to hands-on experience, allowing participants to systematically learn the role of an auctioneer regardless of their academic background or work experience. The program includes a total of nine sessions, held every Monday for 1 hour and 30 minutes each, starting October 13 at the Seoul Auction Gangnam Center. The course is fee-based, with tuition set at around 800,000 won.
The first four sessions comprise the "Auction Basics Course," where participants will learn fundamental knowledge related to art auctions. Topics include auction operations, the role of the auctioneer, attending live auctions, and case studies of overseas markets. The lectures will be led by Jung Taehee, who serves as both the auction team leader and auctioneer at Seoul Auction.
The second stage, the "Training Course," will focus on communication skills that help auctioneers convey credibility and professionalism, such as speech and personal branding. Kang Changjin, CEO of CJ Media Lab, and Kim Mira, CEO of Speech & Communication, will each lead sessions on effective speech techniques and practical speech exercises. Image coaching will also be provided by Yoon Hyemi, CEO of Personal Branding Group YHMG. The final session, scheduled for December 8, will feature a mock auction, allowing participants to put into practice what they have learned during the academy.
A Seoul Auction representative stated, "The 'Auctioneer Course' is Korea's first systematic educational program where anyone, from art enthusiasts to professionals seeking a new career, can directly experience and learn the role of an auctioneer. We believe this will not only foster professional talent, but also help establish art auctions as a cultural activity that everyone can enjoy, rather than a domain reserved for a select few."
