Enhancing Resident Safety and Living Conditions

The Banggok District in Jeonggwan-eup, Gijang County, Busan, has been officially selected as a target site for the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s “2026 Disaster Risk Area Improvement Project.”

On September 15, Gijang County announced that it will begin basic and detailed design work next year, and will launch the full-scale improvement project in 2026, continuing the initiative for four years until 2029.

The Banggok District is a flood-prone area that has suffered repeated flooding due to rising water levels in Jwagwangcheon Stream and insufficient sewer capacity, particularly during the heavy rains in 2014 and Typhoon Omais in 2021. In March of this year, Gijang County applied for the project to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and in April, the area was designated and officially announced as a “Natural Disaster Risk Improvement Zone.” After further consultations with Busan City and the Ministry, the site was finally confirmed as a project target on September 10.

The total project budget is 10.7 billion won (8 billion won from national and city funds, and 2.7 billion won from county funds). The county plans to fundamentally resolve disaster risks in the approximately 5.4-hectare flood-prone area, aiming not only to ensure residents’ safety but also to help create a more pleasant living environment.

Mayor Jung Jongbok stated, “The Banggok District is a representative flood-prone area where residents have suffered inconvenience for a long time. We will carry out the project without delay to protect the lives and property of our citizens and to establish safe living conditions.”

This improvement project is expected to create a synergistic effect in flood prevention by linking with Gijang County’s key initiative, the “Jeonggwan Central Park Stormwater Runoff Reduction Facility Installation Project.”

This project was selected for the 2024 Ministry of the Interior and Safety public offering, with a total investment of 47.8 billion won (27.8 billion won from national and city funds, and 20 billion won from county funds). A two-story underground multi-purpose storage facility will be built within Jeonggwan Central Park, designed to store about 37,500 cubic meters of rainwater during heavy downpours, which is expected to significantly reduce flood damage in urban areas adjacent to Jwagwangcheon Stream.
