Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dongyeon expressed his hope for positive news regarding the final inscription of the "Danwon High School 4·16 Archive," which documents the Sewol Ferry disaster, on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register next year, following its successful completion of the domestic review process.
On September 15, Governor Kim posted on his social media, stating, "The '4·16 Memorial Classroom' still holds the last traces of the second-year Danwon High School students and teachers who went on the school trip," and added, "The Danwon High School 4·16 Archive has passed the first hurdle towards being listed as a UNESCO Memory of the World."
He continued, "I also sat in the seats of Doeon from Class 3 and Youngin from Class 6 and left a letter," and added, "It felt as though the breath and faces of each and every child were vividly present."
He particularly emphasized, "The Memorial Classroom is a space that embodies longing, reflection, empathy, and solidarity," and described it as "a space that represents our promise to build a society where life and safety are respected."
He went on to say, "I sincerely hope for good news in next year's final UNESCO Memory of the World inscription review," and pledged, "I will do my utmost to ensure that the '4·16 Life and Safety Park,' which broke ground last February, continues to carry forward the values of the '4·16 Archive.'"
Meanwhile, on this day, the Danwon High School 4·16 Archive passed the domestic review for inscription on the UNESCO Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Regional Register.
