Police: "Average Case Processing Period is 54.4 Days... Source of Media Reports Unknown"

199 Cases of KT Small Payment Fraud Reported

On September 15, Yoo Jaesung, the acting Commissioner General of the National Police Agency, addressed reports claiming that the average case processing period had increased to 312.7 days following the adjustment of investigative authority between prosecutors and police. He stated, "As of the end of August this year, the average case processing period for the police is 54.4 days," adding, "It has returned to the level before the investigative authority reform."

During a regular press briefing that day, Acting Commissioner General Yoo said, "We do not know the basis or source of the reported information," and added, "Through various efforts, we have reduced the average processing period."


Regarding the unauthorized small-amount mobile payment incident involving KT, the police stated, "Currently, 199 victim reports have been received, and 124 cases are being consolidated and investigated by the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency's Cyber Investigation Unit." They added, "The remaining 75 cases will be transferred to the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency after further investigation of the victims."


According to the Cyber Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency, as of 6 p.m. on the 12th, the total amount of damages from KT's small-amount payment incident was 126 million won. By region, there were 118 cases (77.5 million won) in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province; 62 cases (37.6 million won) in Geumcheon-gu, Seoul; 9 cases (4.1 million won) in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province; 7 cases (5.8 million won) in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province; and 3 cases (1.6 million won) in Incheon.
