Yangcheon District Enhances School Zone Safety with Upgraded "Yellow Carpet"

Enhancing Safety and Durability
with the Adoption of Sign Blocks

Yangcheon District in Seoul (District Mayor Lee Gijae) announced on the 17th that it has completed the "Yellow Carpet Improvement Project" to enhance pedestrian safety within school zones. This project was carried out at three locations-Kangwol Elementary School, Yanggang Elementary School, and Seojeong Elementary School-with a resident participation budget of 40 million won.

The "Yellow Carpet" is a facility designed to guide children to stand in a yellow waiting area in front of crosswalks, thereby ensuring pedestrian safety and making it easier for drivers to recognize them. However, the previous painting method was prone to rapid wear and fading, which led to ongoing calls for regular maintenance.

To address this, the district adopted the "Sign Block" yellow carpet method, which improves upon the shortcomings of painted surfaces. Sign Blocks are functional blocks with excellent durability and color retention, making them resistant to discoloration or damage even under weather conditions such as rain or snow. In addition, the boundary with tactile paving blocks is clearly distinguished, further enhancing the safety of visually impaired pedestrians.

The results of the improvement have also received positive feedback from residents. A resident living near Kangwol Elementary School, identified as Mr. Kim, said, "The color is vivid and easily visible even from a distance, and children stand safely in line with the waiting area. The atmosphere of the neighborhood has also become brighter."

In addition to this improvement project, Yangcheon District is accelerating the expansion of traffic safety facilities. Earlier this year, 185 solar-powered LED traffic safety signs were installed, and the district is also continuing to increase the number of speed enforcement cameras and replace old security light poles.

Lee Gijae, Mayor of Yangcheon District, emphasized, "We will continue to expand traffic safety facilities to ensure a safe commuting environment. We will pay close attention to ensure that children can go to and from school with greater peace of mind."
