The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency has launched a crackdown on alcohol-related violence that threatens the daily lives of citizens, and has arrested and detained a habitual offender in his 30s in the act.
According to the police on July 8, at around 9:30 p.m. on July 5, an intoxicated man caused a disturbance at a restaurant in Buk-gu, Gwangju, by verbally abusing customers and refusing to pay for his drinks, thereby interfering with the restaurant's business. He was arrested at the scene on charges of assaulting the responding police officers as well.
The suspect is currently unemployed and has been identified as a habitual offender with a total of eight previous alcohol-related violence offenses over the past two years. The police applied for an arrest warrant, citing the risk of repeat offenses and flight, and are investigating whether there are additional crimes through inquiries in the vicinity of his residence.
The police stated that this crackdown is part of efforts to establish public order, which will continue until December 31 this year. They also emphasized that they will respond swiftly and strictly to alcohol-related violence offenders who threaten the livelihoods of ordinary citizens, and urged citizens to actively report such cases. The police added that informants will have their identities protected and may be eligible for a reporting reward.
