Chung Cheongrae, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party of Korea, will step down from his position as Chairman of the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee on June 12.
On the morning of the same day, Chung announced on Facebook, "I have completed my duties as Chairman of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee without any major faults. As my term has ended, I am stepping down."
He went on to say, "I would like to thank the people for their support during my tenure as Chairman. Wherever I may be, I will always fulfill my responsibilities with the same dedication as I did at the beginning." He added, "For the success of the Lee Jaemyung administration, I will work harder, with greater humility, and at a lower profile, together with the people, party members, and supporters."

As the Democratic Party is set to elect a new floor leader to succeed Park Chan-dae, who is currently serving as acting party leader and floor leader, on June 13, it is expected that the new Chairman of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee will be decided after the new party leadership is formed.
Regarding the People Power Party's claim that the opposition should take the chairmanship of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee for the normalization of the National Assembly, both Kim Byungki and Seo Youngkyo, candidates for the Democratic Party's floor leader, have made it clear that they have no intention of negotiating with the opposition.
Meanwhile, Chung is expected to compete with Park for the next party leadership following his resignation.
