Gyeonggi-do Introduces 'Gyeonggi Climate Insurance' at UCLG ASPAC Conference, Gains International Attention

Gyeonggi-do received international attention by introducing the 'Gyeonggi Climate Insurance,' the first of its kind in Korea, on the global stage.

On June 12, Gyeonggi-do announced that it had presented the 'Gyeonggi Climate Insurance' as an exemplary policy at the United Cities and Local Governments Asia-Pacific (UCLG ASPAC) conference, which was held in Boracay, Philippines, from June 9 to June 12.

The Gyeonggi Climate Insurance is the first policy insurance in Korea introduced by Gyeonggi-do to protect the health and lives of residents from unpredictable climate change. All residents are automatically enrolled without any separate application process. This insurance provides fixed benefits for diagnoses of heat-related illnesses, cold-related illnesses, and infectious diseases, as well as consolation payments for injuries related to weather advisories.

In addition to the main presentation, Gyeonggi-do also shared a variety of policy cases in the fields of climate, environment, and energy during the subsequent panel discussion, including RE100 (100% use of renewable energy), resource recycling, and environmental education.

The United Cities and Local Governments is an international organization comprising 240,000 local governments and 175 local government associations from 140 countries, aiming to promote policy exchange among local governments and community development. The Asia-Pacific branch has 217 member local governments.

Park Daekeun, Director of Environmental Health and Safety at Gyeonggi-do, who presented the climate insurance on this day, stated, "I am pleased that the Gyeonggi Climate Insurance has been recognized as an outstanding case of climate response not only domestically but also internationally." He added, "This is the result of Gyeonggi-do's policy efforts to proactively respond to unpredictable climate crises being recognized on a global scale."
