17 Universities in Gwangju Aim for 92.5% Voter Turnout
RISE Project Schools Promote Voting Participation and Suffrage

In anticipation of the 21st presidential election, the city of Gwangju and 17 local universities participating in the Regional Innovation-led University Support System (RISE) project are aiming for a voter turnout of 92.5%.
On the 27th, Gwangju City held a 'Commitment to Voting Participation by Faculty and University Students' campaign at city hall. The campaign, held under the slogan "Voting is Power," was organized to foster an atmosphere that encourages voting among university members, including students and faculty.
The campaign was attended by Mayor Kang Kijeong, Lee Geunbae, president of Chonnam National University, Heo Seungjun, president of Gwangju National University of Education, Cho Junbeom, president of Nambu University, Choi Sutae, president of Songwon University, Kim Choonseong, president of Chosun University, Park Sangcheol, president of Honam University, Hwang Minhyo, president of Honam Theological University, Kim Kyungtae, president of Gwangju Health University, Kim Jeongsu, president of Seoyoung University, Park Myeonghee, president of Chosun Nursing College, Bae Kyuhwan, acting dean of Korea Polytechnic V College Gwangju Campus, Jang Miyeong, vice president of Gwangju University, Jeong Seongho, vice president for research at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, as well as representatives from Gwangju Women's University, Christian College of Nursing, Dongkang College, and Chosun College of Science and Technology.
The participants resolved to: ▲ encourage voting among faculty and students; ▲ create an atmosphere of "voting together with family and friends" on the early voting days of May 29-30 and the main voting day of June 3; and ▲ strive to realize the values of democracy and contribute to community development.
Lee Geunbae, president of Chonnam National University, stated, "We will actively cooperate to ensure the voting participation and suffrage of faculty and students," and added, "We will work together to achieve a 92.5% voter turnout in the 21st presidential election."
Mayor Kang Kijeong said, "It is reassuring to see universities, including students and faculty, taking the lead in spreading a culture of voting participation," and added, "Gwangju City will do its utmost until the end to ensure that more citizens can participate in voting comfortably."
Meanwhile, Gwangju City is running the 'Voting Participation Campaign - Voting is Power' to emphasize the importance of 'voting' as a constitutional right and to encourage all generations to participate as responsible voters. The city is implementing tailored support, such as encouraging first-time voters aged 18 and other young people to participate, ensuring that workers can fully exercise their voting rights, and improving accessibility to polling stations.
