Rear Seat in Taxis Is Also a Lifeline... Police Launch Seatbelt Campaign On the 27th, the police conducted a campaign promoting the use of rear seat seatbelts targeting taxi drivers and passengers at the taxi stand in front of Seoul Station. Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency

On the 27th, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced that each district police station held a "Rear Seat Seatbelt Usage" campaign at various locations throughout Seoul, including subway stations, taxi stands, and logistics centers. The campaign involved officers directly approaching drivers and passengers of taxis and other vehicles to encourage them to wear seatbelts.

In practice, it is common for passengers not to wear seatbelts in the rear seat when taking a taxi. According to the 2022 Traffic Culture Index Survey by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the rear seat seatbelt usage rate was only 32.3%.

Failure to wear a seatbelt can result in fatalities in the event of an accident. In Seoul, the number of traffic accident fatalities due to not wearing a seatbelt was 20 last year, and as of April 30th this year, there have been 5 fatalities.

A police official stated, "Seatbelts should be worn so that they support both the shoulders and pelvis, and if not worn properly, passengers may be ejected from the vehicle upon impact in an accident." The official added, "We will continue the campaign to promote seatbelt use in all seats, including the rear seat, by combining on-site guidance and enforcement."
