Installation of New and Renewable Energy Facilities to Be Mandatory in Public Parking Lots Starting November

Installation of New and Renewable Energy Facilities to Be Mandatory in Public Parking Lots Starting November

Going forward, it will be mandatory to install new and renewable energy facilities such as solar power in public parking lots established and operated by the government, local governments, and public institutions.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on May 27 that it will promulgate the amended "Act on the Promotion of the Development, Use, and Diffusion of New and Renewable Energy" (New and Renewable Energy Act), which contains these provisions.

This law will take effect six months after promulgation, in November, and will also apply to parking lots that are already installed and in operation.

The Ministry plans to specify the scope of entities required to comply and the scale of power generation facilities through amendments to subordinate regulations. The obligations will be imposed taking into account on-site conditions such as grid connection and separation distances.

To ease the burden of compliance, financial and administrative support will also be provided. Currently, those seeking to install solar power facilities in public parking lots can receive financial support through the "2025 New and Renewable Energy Financial Support Program."

An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy stated, "The expansion of new and renewable energy facilities such as canopy-type solar power in urban public parking lots is expected to promote the diffusion of renewable energy, achieve carbon neutrality, and realize energy self-sufficiency."
