Haenam Residents Create Authentic Sabangjido to Showcase Tourist Attractions

Recommendations for Food, Activities, Photo Zones, and Hands-on Experiences

Haenam County in Jeonnam Province (Governor Myung Hyun-gwan) announced on the 21st that residents of Hwawon-myeon have discovered places offering food, activities, photo zones, and hands-on experiences, and have created a hand-drawn map.

The “Jjin Sabang Map” of Hwawon-myeon, jointly promoted by Hwawon-myeon, the Residents’ Self-Governing Committee, and the Rural-Fisheries Agreement Support Center, consists of two maps: one for food and one for sightseeing. The maps comprehensively cover all the food, attractions, and activities across the 43 villages of Hwawon-myeon.

The food map lists contact information for restaurants that are well-known among residents as true local favorites, categorized by village and type, and introduces orchards and farms where visitors can purchase local produce. The sightseeing map features major tourist destinations such as the Oshiano Tourism Complex and Mokpogu Lighthouse, as well as various must-visit spots, accommodations, and experience farms that hold unique stories from every corner of the villages.

In particular, the maps are made more engaging by illustrations drawn by the residents themselves, vividly showcasing the hidden charms of Hwawon-myeon. Sixteen “vitality designers,” discovered through the Rural Agreement County Capability Enhancement Project, participated in creating the maps. Since June last year, they have visited all 43 villages to investigate and select key local resources.

The published maps have been distributed to the village leaders of Hwawon-myeon and are displayed in the community centers of all 43 villages. They have also been placed in frequently visited locations such as the township office, hotels, golf courses, and restaurants, receiving positive feedback.

A county official stated, “Hwawon-myeon has recently seen an increase in tourists seeking food and attractions due to the opening of the Oshiano Tourism Complex hotel. By creating a Sabang Map with recommendations known only to residents, we are providing visitors to Haenam with memorable experiences and opportunities.”

Due to the positive response to the pilot project in Hwawon-myeon, the county plans to produce maps for all 14 towns and townships, starting with five this year and expanding annually.
