320 Billion KRW Invested by 2035 for Water Quality Improvement of Uiwang Wangsong Lake

Gyeonggi Province will install artificial wetlands and non-point source pollution reduction facilities to improve the water quality of Wangsong Lake in Uiwang City.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Water Resources Headquarters announced on the 14th that it held a final research report meeting at the Uiwang Algae Ecology Science Museum conference room and prepared the "Implementation Plan for Non-Point Source Pollution Management in the Wangsong Lake Watershed."

The Wangsong Lake watershed (14.16㎢) is an area that requires management of high impervious surfaces (areas where rainwater cannot penetrate, such as concrete) due to nearby industrial and logistics complexes, as well as management of some agricultural non-point source pollution. The Ministry of Environment designated the Wangsong Lake watershed as a non-point source pollution management area in 2021 and established the "Wangsong Lake Watershed Non-Point Source Pollution Management Plan" in 2023.

The Water Resources Headquarters initiated the research project from May last year with water environment research institutions, related officials from Uiwang and Gunpo cities, and non-point source pollution experts, recognizing the need for an implementation plan to effectively achieve the management plan goals.

As a result of the research, it was decided to invest 32 billion KRW by 2035 to implement various non-point source pollution reduction projects, including the installation of two alternative artificial wetlands and five non-point source pollution reduction facilities within the Wangsong Lake watershed, the purchase of five additional street cleaning vehicles, and the application of LID (Low Impact Development) projects in parks and public institutions. Through these efforts, it is expected that the total phosphorus (T-P) load will be reduced by more than 20% in the management flow range (top 5-40% of total flow).

An official from the Water Resources Headquarters stated, "We expect that this implementation plan will enable concrete and practical project promotion to reduce non-point source pollution in the Wangsong Lake watershed," and added, "Since the implementation plan requires approval from the Ministry of Environment, we will make every effort to secure final approval through close cooperation with the Ministry."
