Songpa-gu (District Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced on the 9th that it was the only autonomous district in Seoul to win two awards in the outdoor advertising sector institutional commendations last year.

The district received a Ministerial Commendation at the ‘2024 Outdoor Advertising Work Merit Awards’ hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety on the 27th of last month.

This award was selected by evaluating five areas nationwide across metropolitan and basic local governments: illegal advertising material cleanup, establishment of a proper advertising culture foundation, management and maintenance of political party banners, prevention, cleanup, cooperation, and promotion of illegal advertising materials, and recycling of collected banners.

Notably, in 2024, efforts to eliminate resident inconvenience due to the legalization of political party banners were added as evaluation criteria and applied as an important scoring standard.

Earlier, on the 24th of last month, the district also won the Excellence Award in the ‘2024 Outdoor Advertising Quality Improvement Evaluation’ hosted by Seoul City.

The Seoul City evaluation assesses three areas and ten items related to outdoor advertising cleanup and enforcement, and improvement of signboard quality to create a clean urban landscape and enhance the quality of outdoor advertisements.

The district was highly praised for its efforts over the past year to foster a proper advertising culture and clean up illegal advertising materials.

Key projects included ▲the first basic local government to enact the ‘Political Party Banner Ordinance’ and promote the ‘Political Party Banner Resident Evaluation Group’ ▲the ‘Fair and Square Campaign to Eradicate Illegal Advertising Materials’ and joint night enforcement by civilians, government, and police ▲diversification of the waste banner recycling project contributing to ‘budget savings’ and ‘job creation’ ▲and the promotion of signboard improvement projects to enhance the urban aesthetics of underdeveloped areas.

In particular, the district created a ‘Political Party Banner Management and Installation Guidebook’ to help clearly understand related laws and regulations and conducted enforcement and maintenance based on accurate grounds.

Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, “This achievement is a valuable result of our efforts to eliminate resident inconvenience caused by illegal advertising materials. Going forward, Songpa-gu will continue to implement various projects not only to clean up illegal advertising materials but also to resolve safety threats and urban aesthetic deterioration, thereby establishing itself as a premium city.”
