State Department "Korea Peacefully Observes Constitutional Procedures... Demonstrates Democratic Resilience"
On the 27th (local time), the U.S. government stated regarding the National Assembly's impeachment motion against Prime Minister Han Deok-su, acting president, "We are ready to work with Acting Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok and the South Korean government."
On the same day, in response to Yonhap News Agency's inquiry about the impeachment of Acting President Han following President Yoon Seok-yeol, the State Department said, "We have witnessed South Korea peacefully following the procedures stipulated in its constitution," and made this statement. The State Department added, "The most important thing is that South Korea has demonstrated democratic resilience," and emphasized that they strongly support the Korean people throughout this process.
The U.S. Department of Defense also told Yonhap News Agency, "We once again emphasize our support for South Korea, the Korean people, democratic procedures, and the rule of law," adding, "Our commitment to the ROK-U.S. alliance remains steadfast." The Defense Department further stated, "The ROK-U.S. alliance has made significant progress in recent years," and "We look forward to working with South Korea to achieve even more progress."
Earlier, the U.S. government issued an official statement expressing "grave concern" over President Yoon's declaration of martial law and criticized it. Subsequently, it emphasized resolving issues through democracy and constitutional procedures, stating that South Korea is adhering to these.
On the 24th, during the visit of Kim Hong-gyun, First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, to the U.S., it was agreed to fully resume key diplomatic and security schedules between the two countries, which had been postponed due to the martial law and impeachment situation in South Korea, under the acting president system.
