Warm Steps of Dongdaemun-gu Mayor Ilpyeong Lee Observing Single-Person Households in Gosiwon

Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) visited gosiwons at the end of the year to check on the lives of single-person households.

The district selected six gosiwons with relatively poor living conditions through a preliminary survey and conducted a 'Housing Environment Inspection' and 'Single-Person Household Meeting' starting from December 23 at A Gosiwon in Jangandong.

Life in a gosiwon of about 3 pyeong (approximately 9.9 square meters) seemed more difficult than expected. During the meeting with the mayor, residents of the gosiwon said, "The hardest part is loneliness," and "It is difficult because there is no one to take care of me if I get sick."

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, "In addition to physical support, we will strengthen mental welfare services such as psychological counseling and establish a system to easily access related information and receive support."

He also encouraged participation in 'Dongil-ui Neighborhood Friends,' a social network formation program (self-help group) supported by Dongdaemun-gu for activity expenses.

The district shared daily necessities such as rice, kimchi, ramen, and blankets, donated by the local community through the gosiwon’s local community service center, with single-person households living in the gosiwons.

As the final schedule of the 'Gosiwon Single-Person Household Care,' Mayor Lee Pil-hyung and staff plan to visit a one-room hotel located in Huigyeong-dong on the 26th.
