Barrier-Free Implementation for Safe Elevator Use by Visually Impaired
Rapid Response to Elevator Entrapment Accidents Involving Visually Impaired
Busan Metropolitan Corporation (BMC) has attached safety rule braille films inside elevators in 19 rental apartment complexes (15,077 households) including the Bansong district.
This project was promoted in collaboration with the Korea Elevator Safety Agency to ensure the safety of visually impaired people living in or visiting rental apartments and to enable prompt response in case of elevator entrapment accidents.
The response guidelines for visually impaired people trapped in elevators consist of four items: ① Press the intercom in an emergency ② Inform the elevator number near the intercom during the call ③ Do not forcibly open the door ④ Wait calmly until rescue.
Shin Chang-ho, President of Busan Metropolitan Corporation, said, “Attaching safety rule braille films inside elevators is an essential project for the safe use of elevators by visually impaired people,” and added, “BMC will strive to continuously improve welfare for people with disabilities by actively promoting elevator safety rules so that visually impaired people can use elevators with confidence.”
