Deriving Excellent Outcomes Reflecting Opinions of Over 4,100 Citizens
Busan Port Authority (BPA) selected the ‘Top 10 Achievements of Busan Port in 2024’ by reflecting the results of a one-week online public vote on the achievements accomplished this year.
The voting, held from the 5th to the 11th, involved approximately 4,100 citizens who voted on 15 candidate achievements for this year.
As a result of the public vote, major achievements of Busan Port this year were selected, including ‘Expected record-high cargo volume at Busan Port (24.3 million TEU)’, ‘Opening of Korea’s first fully automated terminal (eco-friendly, smart port)’, and ‘Reallocation of North Port functions through the country’s first container terminal relocation’.
This year, Busan Port’s container throughput is expected to increase by 5% compared to the previous year, reaching 24.3 million TEU. Despite adverse external conditions such as the Russia-Ukraine war, Middle East crises, escalating geopolitical conflicts, and increased uncertainty in the global logistics market due to US-China hegemonic competition, Busan Port achieved a record-high cargo volume, enhancing its status as Korea’s number one container port and the world’s second-largest transshipment port.
As the global port paradigm shifts towards smartization and decarbonization, with leading ports worldwide competing to build systems and infrastructure, BPA successfully opened the country’s first fully automated port, the New Port South Container Terminal phases 2-5. Based on domestic technology and eco-friendly equipment, the era of fully automated ports has begun, aiming to keep pace with global trends through increased efficiency and environmental friendliness.
Additionally, through Korea’s first terminal relocation, BPA promoted the reallocation of North Port functions. Despite large-scale equipment transfers, uninterrupted logistics were realized by simultaneously operating existing and new terminals. Furthermore, through consultations with related organizations, BPA achieved 100% employment retention of workers at the existing terminal and secured the target site for the second phase of North Port redevelopment, establishing conditions for regional growth and faithfully fulfilling its role as the managing entity of Busan Port.
Top 10 achievements were selected across various fields including safety (maintaining zero serious accidents among workers for three consecutive years), eco-friendliness (reducing Busan Port’s carbon emissions by 20.45%), digital transformation (introducing port-type Hi-Pass e-slip at all terminals), and financial soundness (achieving 21 consecutive years of profitable management since establishment).
BPA has achieved its best performance since its founding through a total of 29 external awards and certifications, including 19 external awards and 10 external certifications from the government and accredited institutions, recognizing its accomplishments and efforts.
Kang Jun-seok, President of BPA, said, “We thank the public for their interest and support for Busan Port this year,” adding, “We will make Busan Port a global leading port through support for regional and industrial growth and ESG management.”
