High Evaluation in Suicide Prevention Budget and Workforce... 2.5% Decrease in Suicide Deaths per 100,000 Compared to Previous Year
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yuseonghun) announced that it was selected as an excellent local government in the ‘2024 6th National Assembly Suicide Prevention Awards’ hosted by the National Assembly Suicide Prevention Forum.
The National Assembly Suicide Prevention Awards are implemented to discover and spread excellent policies to prevent extreme choices. A total of 229 basic local governments nationwide are evaluated by dividing them into four groups of cities, districts, and counties with populations under and over 300,000.
Geumcheon-gu belongs to the district group and scored a total of 74.8 points through the evaluation of 17 indicators in five areas: organization, budget, personnel, projects, and suicide rate. Compared to other local governments in the same evaluation group, it received high ratings in budget and personnel.
According to Statistics Korea data in 2023, the number of deaths by suicide per 100,000 people in Geumcheon-gu is 27.3. Compared to 2022, this is a 2.5% decrease from the previous year, which is analyzed as showing the results of the district’s suicide prevention projects.
According to the suicide prevention implementation plan, the district is promoting various customized suicide prevention projects by life cycle, such as suicide prevention education, training life keepers, life love campaigns, Geumcheon-gu suicide prevention policy seminars, and psychological counseling.
In particular, this year, programs for the 30s and 40s generations were operated, focusing on activities emphasizing psychological recovery and emotional management for the youth. In 2025, the district plans to focus on operating the ‘Life Respect Safe Village’ to implement more systematic suicide prevention policies.
Yuseonghun, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “Since suicide is a problem caused by complex factors, we will expand customized prevention measures by linking various resources in the local community,” and added, “We will continue to discover various policies and projects to protect the lives of residents.”
Geumcheon-gu residents who need suicide prevention counseling or are struggling with depression, anxiety, stress, etc., can receive help by contacting the Geumcheon-gu Mental Health Welfare Center or Geumcheon-gu Public Health Center.
