54 Residents... Expected to Alleviate Farm Labor Shortage
Jeongeup City in Jeollabuk-do will complete the construction of a newly established dormitory on the 20th to improve the living conditions and prevent human rights violations of foreign seasonal agricultural workers.
According to the city on the 13th, the dormitory located in Buk-myeon has a total floor area of 1,441㎡ and consists of two above-ground floors with 26 rooms, created through remodeling.
Each floor is equipped with a shared kitchen, dining area, and lounge space, allowing 54 people to live together. It is also designed to help foreign workers quickly adapt to the local environment through communal living.
The dormitory will be operated on a pilot basis in connection with the public seasonal labor project, initially housing about 40 male workers entering with E-8 visas. It is expected to provide significant assistance to farms requiring short-term labor and farmers who have difficulty providing accommodations.
The city plans to collect monthly usage fees and utility charges separately to operate the dormitory efficiently, and aims to systematize standards for residency, exemptions, and safety management through ordinances and regulations to be implemented in January next year.
Mayor Lee Hak-su stated, “By remodeling the dormitory for foreign workers, we will provide a comfortable and stable living environment to guarantee basic human rights and do our best to ensure that farms do not suffer from labor shortages.”
