Peace Momo Foundation to Hold Seminar on the 17th
Topic: "Discussing AI Weaponization Now"
"Highlighting AI's Threats and Impacts on Human Rights and Peace"
As AI-powered weapons are being deployed in real combat in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip of Palestine, concerns about the 'weaponization of AI' have become a reality.
Since ethical and technical discussions have not been sufficiently conducted, it is difficult to gauge the extent of the risks posed by AI. Amid this, a forum to explore how to regulate and manage the various risks caused by AI weaponization was held domestically.
On the 5th, the nonprofit organization Peace Momo announced that it will hold an international seminar titled "AI Dystopia: Conversations We Must Have Now About AI Weaponization" on the 17th at Blue Square in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
AI systems risk failing to distinguish between civilians and combatants or making inhumane and erroneous decisions based on incorrect data. There are calls to urgently establish appropriate regulations to ensure that human rights and humanitarian principles are not violated.
Peace Momo stated, "Strong international regulations and oversight are necessary to minimize the ethical risks of AI weaponization and to prevent AI from being used to evade human responsibility." They explained the background of the seminar as "a forum prepared to shed light on how far AI weaponization has advanced, how prepared the international community is to respond, the threats AI poses to human rights and peace, and the impact of AI militarization on the right of all beings living on this planet to live peacefully."
At the seminar, Toby Walsh, Chair Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of New South Wales, Australia, will deliver the keynote speech. Professor Walsh plays a central role in human rights-based approaches in international discussions on AI weaponization. In 2018, he expressed concerns about KAIST’s development of weaponized robotic dogs in Korea and led a global boycott of KAIST’s robotics research collaboration with scientists worldwide, drawing significant attention.
Panelists include Sai Bourothu, researcher at the Automated Decision-Making Institute; Kim Dong-pyo, Content Editing Team 2 Manager at Asia Economy; and Oh Byung-il, representative of the Jinbo Network. Moon Ah-young, CEO of Peace Momo, will moderate the session. The seminar, conducted with simultaneous Korean-English interpretation, is hosted by Peace Momo and sponsored by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation of Germany.
