40 Rainwater Drains in Seongdong-gu Wangsimni Food Alley Replaced with 'Yellow Box'

Replacement of 40 Rainwater Inlets with 'Yellow Boxes' in Wangsimni Food Alley with High October Foot Traffic to Prevent Road Flooding and Create a Pleasant Street Environment... Stickers Attached Around 400 Rainwater Inlets in the Area to Prevent Unauthorized Disposal of Cigarette Butts and Other Debris, Encouraging Voluntary Participation in Prevention

Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Wono) announced that it will enhance the functionality of storm drains by replacing their designs and attaching stickers to prevent illegal dumping of trash.

To prevent road flooding and create a pleasant street environment, the district replaced 40 storm drains in the Wangsimni food alley area, which has a high foot traffic, with 'Yellow Boxes' last October.

The 'Yellow Box' was introduced to provide a visual effect to prevent illegal dumping of trash in advance. It is designed with a yellow band around the storm drain cover.

The district secured city funds to promote the project and plans to prevent the deterioration of drainage capacity and flood damage by improving the design of storm drains to prevent illegal dumping of trash.

In addition, the district completed attaching stickers around 400 storm drains in the area to prevent illegal dumping of foreign substances such as cigarette butts. The stickers contain messages encouraging the prevention of illegal dumping, such as "Wait, if you throw trash here, the stormwater will overflow" and "Overflowing trash, overflowing stormwater."

The district plans to attach stickers mainly in areas with high foot traffic such as Seongsu-dong around Seoul Forest and cafe streets, subway stations Hangdang and Oksu, and main roads, to naturally induce residents' awareness for creating a clean urban landscape.

The district will analyze the effects of the storm drain design improvement project and gradually expand the installation of 'Yellow Boxes' while thoroughly preventing flooding through continuous cleaning and management of storm drains.

Jeong Wono, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "By improving the design of storm drains, we are encouraging voluntary participation from residents to prevent illegal dumping of trash," and added, "We will continue to do our best to make Seongdong a safe city free from various disasters without flood damage."
