November 5 National Assembly Library 'Arctic Route Hub Port Forum', United Effort to Secure Arctic Route
Mayor Lee, "Proactive Preparation for the Arctic Route Era, Leap to an East Sea Economic Hub City"
Pohang City will hold the "Arctic Route Hub Port Forum" under the theme "From Yeongil Bay to the Arctic, Pohang! Opening the Arctic Ocean" on the 5th of next month at the National Assembly Library's small conference room.
In response to the accelerating Arctic sea ice melt and the expected increase in cargo volume using the Arctic Ocean, Pohang City, Gyeongbuk Province, Congressman Kim Jeong-jae (Pohang Buk-gu), and Congressman Jeong Hee-yong (Gyeongbuk Goryeong·Seongju·Chilgok) have joined forces to proactively prepare for the rapidly changing international situation by co-hosting this forum.
The forum will begin with a keynote speech by Ha Young-seok, Chairman of the Korea Shipping and Port Academic Association, titled "The Era of the Arctic Route and the Challenges for Pohang Yeongil Bay Port," followed by presentations on the current status and prospects of the Arctic route era and plans to activate the Arctic route linked with Pohang Yeongil Bay Port.
Additionally, under the chairmanship of Kim In-hyun, Honorary Professor at Korea University Law School, experts will engage in discussions on strategies for Yeongil Bay Port to leap forward as a logistics port in the East Sea Rim region and on establishing strategies aligned with Arctic policies.
In particular, this forum is expected to be a platform for gathering wisdom to advance Yeongil Bay Port as a forward base for the Arctic route, with participation from experts of various institutions including the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), Gyeongbuk Research Institute, Small and Medium Shipbuilding Research Institute, Polar Research Institute, Maeil Shinmun, and Korea Urban Regeneration Institute.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, "As the only container port in Gyeongbuk, Pohang Yeongil Bay Port will make every effort to proactively prepare for the full-fledged Arctic route era and advance as an economic hub city in the East Sea Rim region," adding, "I hope many people will take an interest in and participate in the Arctic Route Hub Port Forum."
The forum will be broadcast live on YouTube, and participation is possible by searching for "Arctic Route Hub Port Forum" or using the QR code.
