Participation in Pilot Project with Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport
Early Adoption Ahead of Mandatory Implementation in 2026
Hyundai Motor Group is participating in the government's pilot project for battery certification. The plan is to secure safety by obtaining battery certification earlier than the mandatory implementation in February 2026.
On the 15th, Hyundai Motor Group announced that it signed a business agreement with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to conduct the pilot project for battery safety certification at the Eco-friendly Vehicle and Parts Certification Center of the Automobile Safety Research Institute in the Gwangju Bitgreen Industrial Complex.
The battery safety certification system is a system in which the safety of electric vehicle batteries is pre-certified by the government. For electric vehicle batteries (packs), a type approval system is applied, requiring safety performance tests by the Automobile Safety Research Institute and certification by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Batteries for not only electric passenger cars but also electric buses and electric trucks are subject to verification.
Originally, after the system is implemented in February next year, a one-year grace period allows manufacturers to verify safety on their own, but Hyundai Motor Group decided to participate early to alleviate customer concerns.
Kim Dong-wook, Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, said, "To ensure the safety of electric vehicles, Hyundai Motor Group is the first among completed vehicle manufacturers to participate in this pilot project. We will continue to conduct research and development on electric vehicle and battery safety technologies and work closely with the government to continuously strive to alleviate the public's safety concerns regarding electric vehicle fires."
