"Needed Living Expenses Such as One-Room Monthly Rent," Statement

A woman in her 20s who broke into a jewelry store in the middle of the night and stole precious metals worth tens of millions of won was eventually caught by the police.

According to Yonhap News, the Gwangsan Police Station in Gwangju reported on the 15th that they arrested and are investigating A (22) on charges of special theft. A is accused of breaking into a jewelry store in Dosan-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, around 3:30 p.m. the previous day and stealing precious metals worth about 50 million won.

At the time of the incident, A reportedly lifted a brick lying on the street to break the jewelry store’s glass window and display case, completed the crime in about two minutes, and fled. It is said that A acted cautiously to evade police pursuit by taking a taxi from a location far from the crime scene and changing clothes.

The jewelry store had a private security company’s security system installed, but it was reportedly not operational at the time of the incident.

The police began investigating after receiving a report from a passerby around 6:30 a.m. on the day of the incident, and arrested A around 6:30 p.m., about 12 hours later, at a pet cafe in Gwangju. A reportedly told the police that "I needed living expenses such as rent for a one-room apartment."

The police have recovered all the stolen precious metals and plan to apply for an arrest warrant after accurately determining the details of the incident.
