On the 20th, Two Second-Year Students from Dangok High School Awarded Gwanak District Mayor's Commendation... Actively Discovering and Encouraging Exemplary Youth and Good Deeds

Gwanak-gu Honors Teenager Who Stopped 1-Ton Cargo Truck with Their Body

Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Jun-hee) awarded the ‘Model Good Deed Youth Commendation’ to students who stopped a 1-ton cargo truck slipping down a steep slope with their bodies, preventing a major disaster, on the 20th.

The students are Kim Yeon-jun and Kim Yoon-seo, both in the 2nd grade at Dangok High School.

At 9:11 PM on June 1, the two students noticed a 1-ton cargo truck parked on a steep alley in Euncheon-dong, Gwanak-gu, slowly moving and sliding down the slope. At that time, the students were returning home after finishing their workout at a nearby gym.

The students did not hesitate to stop the truck with their bodies, but their strength was insufficient. They then called for help from passersby, and a total of seven people joined together to stop the truck and quickly reported the incident to 119.

The group of seven, known as the ‘Gwanak-gu Avengers,’ encouraged each other and held back the slipping truck with their bodies until the 119 emergency responders arrived at the scene.

Recalling the situation, the two students humbly said, “Because the slope was steep, we only thought about stopping the truck before a serious accident happened.”

The fire official who arrived after the report said, “If it weren’t for the students and local residents, a major disaster would have occurred.”

The Model Youth Commendation is awarded by the district to actively encourage exemplary and good deed activities of youth by discovering heartwarming cases in the community through school principal recommendations, media reports, and other methods.

District Mayor Park Jun-hee said, “I was deeply moved by the courage of the two students who risked their bodies to prevent a major disaster,” and added, “We will continue to discover youth who serve as role models for local residents every year and strive to create a clear and healthy local culture.”
