The Ministry of Personnel Management announced on the 20th the final successful candidates for the 2024 Grade 9 National Civil Service Open Recruitment, totaling 4,861 people.
By category, 4,185 candidates in the administrative group and 676 candidates in the science and technology group received final acceptance notifications. Among them, 118 candidates passed under the disability quota, with 105 in the administrative group and 13 in the science and technology group. Under the low-income quota, 136 candidates passed, with 120 in the administrative group and 16 in the science and technology group.
The gender ratio of this year’s successful candidates was nearly equal. Among the successful candidates, 2,474 were male, accounting for 50.9%, and 2,387 were female, accounting for 49.1%. The proportion of female successful candidates slightly decreased compared to last year’s 50% (2,766 people).
The average age of successful candidates was 29.5 years, a slight increase from last year’s 29.4 years. Looking at the proportion of successful candidates by age group, those aged 20?29 were the largest group with 2,975 people, accounting for 61.2%, followed by those aged 30?39 at 32.9% (1,599 people).
Compared to last year, the proportion of candidates in their 20s decreased by 0.8 percentage points, while the proportion of those in their 30s increased by 1.2 percentage points. Next were ages 40?49 at 4.9% (237 people), 50 and above at 0.9% (47 people), and 18?19 at 0.1% (3 people).
This year’s Grade 9 National Civil Service written exam was held on March 23. The 6,237 candidates who passed the written exam underwent interviews from the 29th of last month to the 3rd of this month and received their final acceptance notifications on this day. The final successful candidates must register as recruitment candidates on the Cyber National Examination Center between the 21st and 25th. Failure to register will be considered a withdrawal from appointment.
Meanwhile, according to the Ministry of Personnel Management, the average competition rate for this year’s Grade 9 civil service open recruitment was 21.8 to 1. This is the lowest figure in 32 years since 1992 (19.3 to 1) and is about one-quarter of the 93.3 to 1 rate in 2011.
As analyses suggest that the popularity of Grade 9 civil service positions has sharply declined due to relatively low salaries, conservative organizational culture, and malicious complaints, the government has taken measures. To improve treatment for low-ranking civil servants, the Ministry of Personnel Management raised the starting salary (Step 1) for Grade 9 by 6% compared to last year. Accordingly, the 2024 Grade 9 starting salary (Step 1) will exceed 30 million KRW annually (an average of 2.51 million KRW per month) for the first time, reaching 30.1 million KRW. The ministry also plans to implement various measures to improve civil servant treatment, such as expanding promotion opportunities for low-ranking civil servants.
