Intel CEO Gelsinger to Visit Korea in June... Will He Meet Lee Jae-yong?

Intel Delivers Keynote at AI Summit in Korea
Possibility of Meeting with Memory Partners
Attention on Potential Meeting with SK Hynix

Pat Gelsinger, CEO of Intel, is expected to visit South Korea in June and meet with executives from partner companies Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to discuss business. The semiconductor industry is particularly focused on whether this visit will mark the first meeting in two years between CEO Gelsinger and Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong.

According to the semiconductor industry on the 29th, CEO Gelsinger will visit South Korea to attend the ‘Intel Artificial Intelligence (AI) Summit’ held by Intel Korea on June 5. After delivering a keynote speech at the IT exhibition ‘Computex Taipei 2024’ in Taiwan on June 4, he will immediately travel to South Korea and give a keynote speech of about 30 minutes at the AI Summit.

The semiconductor industry anticipates that CEO Gelsinger’s visit to Korea could lead to more concrete business discussions with domestic memory partners. Intel is known for its processors such as central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs), and since technical collaboration between processors and memory is essential in computing architecture, Intel has continuously worked with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.

In particular, Samsung Electronics is a competitor to Intel in the foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturing) sector, but since it operates both memory and system semiconductor businesses and has a wide range of business areas including PCs and mobile devices, it is an important partner and customer for Intel. This is why there is speculation that CEO Gelsinger may meet with Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and other executives during this visit to discuss related business matters in detail.

Previously, CEO Gelsinger visited Korea in May 2022 and met with Chairman Lee at Samsung Electronics’ Seocho building. In December of the same year, he also met with Kyung Kye-hyun, President of Samsung Electronics’ Device Solutions (DS) Division, and Kim Woo-joon, President of Samsung Electronics’ DX Division Network Business Unit, to further discuss cooperation. In May last year, he also met with Roh Tae-moon, President of Samsung Electronics’ MX Division.

Samsung Electronics will attend this summit to showcase its AI business achievements. An executive from the Memory Business Division will participate and make related presentations. The AI Summit is held to introduce Intel’s AI solutions and partner collaboration cases. This is the first time it is being held in Korea.

Naver, which is strengthening AI cooperation with Intel, will also attend the AI Summit. Naver Cloud, which is developing large language models (LLMs) using Intel’s AI accelerator ‘Gaudi2,’ plans to make a presentation. Naver Cloud announced earlier this month that it will also launch the ‘AI Joint Research Center (NICL)’ to expand the AI ecosystem in collaboration with Intel.
