Jinju Mayor Jo Gyu-il Delivers Cultural Property Designation Certificate for 'Choi Dae-seong Jeongnyeo Plaque'

"Visiting Designated Cultural Heritage Sites, Committed to the Best Preservation and Utilization of Valuable Cultural Assets"

On the 12th, Jo Gyu-il, Mayor of Jinju City, visited the site in Angan-ri, Micheon-myeon, where the 'Jinju Choi Dae-seong Jeongnyeo Plaque,' designated as a cultural heritage material by Gyeongnam Province at the end of February, is located. He encouraged the clan members and handed over the cultural heritage designation certificate.

On this day, Choi Hyeong-jun, the representative of the Gyeongju Choi clan and a direct descendant of General Choi Dae-seong, along with clan members and local residents, gathered to celebrate the designation of the Choi Dae-seong Jeongnyeo Plaque as a cultural heritage material by Gyeongnam Province.

General Choi Dae-seong served as a military officer under Admiral Yi Sun-sin during the Imjin War and died in 1598 at the Battle of Boseong, fighting against Japanese forces alongside his two sons. He was posthumously promoted to Minister of Personnel, and when the Jeongnyeo was granted in 1752, a Jeongnyeo Pavilion was erected in Boseong. In 1890 (the 27th year of King Gojong's reign), his descendants moved the Jeongnyeo Pavilion to Micheon-myeon, where it remains today.

Descendants have diligently maintained and preserved the pavilions and plaques erected to honor General Choi Dae-seong’s loyalty and filial piety, and as a result of these efforts, the site has now been designated as a cultural heritage material by Gyeongnam Province.

Mayor Jo said, “I congratulate the designation of the plaque recording General Choi Dae-seong’s loyalty during the Imjin War as a cultural heritage material by Gyeongnam Province. I also thank Mr. Choi Hyeong-jun, representative of the Gyeongju Choi clan, and all related parties for their efforts in achieving this designation. The city will continue to strive to reveal the value of hidden cultural assets and ensure their preservation.”

The Choi Dae-seong Jeongnyeo Plaque designated as a cultural heritage material by Gyeongnam Province consists of four items in total: the Jeongnyeo plaque, the Jeongnyeo record plaque, the Jeongnyeo reconstruction record plaque, and the restoration roof tile plaque. These plaques collectively document the Jeongnyeo and reconstruction processes, thereby being recognized for their value as cultural heritage.
