The 47th Today's Writer Award has been awarded to Kim Hwajin's short story collection 'Naju-e Daehayeo' (Munhakdongne·2022), Minumsa announced on the 27th. The award was selected by a panel of 50 judges from first novel collections published by new writers between October last year and September this year.
The judging panel commented that the winning work is "a detailed painting of the mind that traces the direction the heart moves along the texture of one's own sentences," and that "the desire in Kim Hwajin's stories to accurately understand the emotions of oneself and others, and the attitude to write persistently for this purpose, is precisely the courage and attitude needed for 'Today's Writer.'"
'Naju-e Daehayeo' is Kim's first short story collection, who debuted through the 2021 New Year's Literary Contest. It includes a total of eight short stories, including the title story, 'New Story,' 'Dream and Cooking,' and 'Silent Lion.'
The prize includes a creative support fund of 20 million won. The award ceremony will be held on the 18th of next month at Minumsa's headquarters in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. The acceptance speech and full judging comments will be published in the literary magazine 'Liter' to be released next month.
