Violinist Yoo Da-yoon won 2nd place in the violin category at the 2023 Long Thibaud International Competition, which concluded on the 26th.
On the 27th, the Kumho Cultural Foundation announced that violinist Yoo Da-yoon, a former Kumho Young Artist, secured 2nd place in the violin category at the 2023 Long Thibaud International Competition held in Paris, France, which concluded on November 26 local time.
Yoo Da-yoon will receive a prize of 20,000 euros (approximately 28.59 million KRW) for her 2nd place finish. Along with other awardees, she will be invited to over ten world-renowned music festivals as part of the competition prizes, including the Gstaad New Year Festival, Lyon Chopin Association, and the Cifras Foundation Festival.
The Long Thibaud International Competition was founded in 1943 by world-renowned pianist Marguerite Long and violinist Jacques Thibaud. The competition is held every two or three years in the piano, violin, and vocal categories, targeting young musicians aged 16 to 33. Notable Korean winners in the past include Lim Dong-hyuk (1st place, piano, 2001), Kim Jun-hee (2nd place, piano, 2007), Ahn Jong-do (2nd place without 1st, piano, 2012), Lee Hyuk (joint 1st place, piano, 2022), Shin Ji-ah (1st place, violin, 2008), and bass singer Shim Ki-hwan (1st place, vocal, 2011).
This year, 21 violinists advanced to the finals through preliminary rounds. From the first round and semi-finals held from the 22nd, the final five finalists, including Yoo Da-yoon, were selected. On the 26th, Yoo Da-yoon performed Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47, with the Orchestre de la Garde r?publicaine (conducted by Fran?ois Boulanger) at the main auditorium of Paris 2 University (Panth?on-Assas University), earning 2nd place.
The 1st place prize went to Bohdan Luts from Ukraine, and 3rd place was awarded to Koshir? Takeuchi from Japan.
Yoo Da-yoon graduated from Yewon School and entered Korea National University of Arts three years early. She is currently studying under Kolja Blacher at the Hans Eisler School of Music Berlin. She debuted in 2017 with the Kumho Young Artist Concert and gained recognition as a finalist in the 2022 Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition. In the same year, she received the Stennebruecken Award, the “Best Soloist Award” chosen by orchestra members at the Baden-Baden Carl Flesch Academy, and in 2021, she was awarded the Kronberg Academy Special Prize in the violin category at the ARD International Music Competition.
In 2023, Yoo Da-yoon participated as a guest second violinist of the Arete Quartet in the string quartet category of the Mozart International Competition, winning 1st place along with the award for the best interpretation of Mozart’s works. She has performed with prestigious orchestras such as the South Bohemian Philharmonic, Baden-Baden Philharmonic, Pozna? Philharmonic, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Karlovy Vary Symphony, and Suwon Philharmonic, and has appeared as a guest member with the Berlin Philharmonic, Seoul Philharmonic, Novus Quartet, and Chianti Ensemble.
Additionally, since 2023, Yoo Da-yoon has been selected as a beneficiary of the Kumho Instrument Bank and performs on a 1774 Guadagnini Turin violin. She is scheduled to perform in the 'Kumho Instrument Series' on March 7, 2024.
