Patent Office: "Korea-Indonesia Activate Permanent Cooperation Channel... Strengthening Corporate Intellectual Property Protection"

The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) is activating a permanent cooperation channel with Indonesia (hereinafter referred to as Inni) to strengthen the protection of local intellectual property rights for Korean export companies.

According to KIPO on the 7th, Inni is a country rich in natural resources and has a huge market with a population of 270 million. For the same reason, Inni is the country where domestic consumer goods companies put the most effort into expanding their export markets in the Southeast Asian region.

In particular, Inni is recognized as the second largest ASEAN country in trademark applications and the third largest in patent applications and registrations by domestic companies. This highlights the importance of protecting intellectual property rights of Korean companies locally in Inni.

Accordingly, KIPO held a joint seminar with the Indonesian Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP) and agreed to strengthen cooperation through information exchange and regular joint seminars between the two countries.

The core of the agreement is mutual cooperation in enforcement work based on the shared understanding that effective intellectual property rights enforcement is the foundation of economic activities.

At the seminar, KIPO and DGIP discussed future cooperation directions in the field of intellectual property infringement enforcement, including exchange of investigation information and regular joint seminars, based on the 'Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding' signed last September.

At the event, Anom Wibowo, Director of Investigation and Dispute Resolution at DGIP, said, "In Inni, the Korean Wave is sometimes called the 'K-tsunami.' We plan to strengthen enforcement against intellectual property infringements of Korean companies' products, which are increasing due to the spread of the Korean Wave."

He added, "If Korean companies involved in intellectual property disputes in Inni directly report or request investigations to DGIP, we will promptly and actively carry out enforcement. Utilizing the Korea-Inni 'Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding' signed last September will also enable rapid patent acquisition," he emphasized.

Lee In-sil, Commissioner of KIPO, said, "The seminar was organized to strengthen cooperation in intellectual property infringement enforcement between the two countries. This occasion is meaningful as it provides a turning point for domestic export companies to directly communicate intellectual property difficulties to DGIP and quickly resolve issues."
