A man in his 40s sentenced to prison and taken into custody for sending 1 won and 100 won transfers with abusive names in the remitter field
A man in his 40s who stalked his ex-girlfriend by making over 1,000 phone calls in five days was sentenced to prison and detained in court.
According to a Yonhap News report on the 25th, Judge Oh Gi-du of the Incheon District Court Criminal Division 1 sentenced A (44), who was indicted without detention on charges of violating the Stalking Crime Punishment Act, to one year in prison and ordered his detention in court.
A was tried on charges of stalking his ex-girlfriend B by making 1,117 phone calls to her over five days from September 18 to 22 last year. In the same month, he also transferred small amounts of money, such as 1 won or 100 won, 211 times to a bank account under B’s name, sometimes writing abusive language in the depositor’s message field.
Judge Oh pointed out, "The defendant expressed remorse and promised not to commit the crime again, but the motive and method of the crime are not favorable." He further explained the reason for sentencing, saying, "Considering that the victim is suffering severe mental distress and that she petitioned for a harsh punishment of the defendant."
The stalking acts defined under the Stalking Crime Punishment Act include sending objects, writings, words, codes, sounds, pictures, videos, or images via mail, telephone, fax, or information and communication networks as defined in Article 2, Paragraph 1, Subparagraph 1 of the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection. Those who commit stalking crimes face imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of up to 30 million won.
