"CJ Freshway Recognized for Resource Circulation Contributions, Receives Ministry of Environment Commendation"

Positive Feedback on Establishing a Resource Circulation System Linked to Business

CJ Freshway announced on the 7th that it received the Minister of Environment Commendation in the field of excellence in household waste management from the Ministry of Environment on the 5th, Environment Day. This recognition was given for its achievements over the past three years in establishing and operating a resource circulation system linked to its business, in cooperation with the Korea Environment Corporation, an agency under the Ministry of Environment, and others, including ice packs and plastic partitions.

Since October 2021, CJ Freshway has participated in the "Proper Treatment and Reuse Activation of Ice Packs" project as the first domestic company in Korea, in collaboration with the Korea Environment Corporation and local governments such as Hwaseong City and Gwangmyeong City. Through this initiative, 75,700 ice packs were reused by December last year, which is equivalent to reducing approximately 4.5 tons of microplastic emissions. The project has been recognized as a catalyst for expanding participation in ice pack reuse and was selected as an excellent collaboration case by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety in 2021.

Additionally, CJ Freshway successfully carried out a pilot project for a plastic partition resource circulation system from November last year to May this year, in cooperation with the Korea Environment Corporation, the Korea Cleaning Association, and the Korea Plastic Single Material Association. After the COVID-19 quarantine measures were lifted, plastic partitions discarded from group catering facilities were collected and reprocessed into recycled raw materials to be transformed into signboards, product display stands, and more. As a result, about 5,500 tons of carbon emissions were reduced over the past six months. This project, introduced for the first time in Korea by CJ Freshway and related organizations such as the Korea Environment Corporation, served as a catalyst for the participation of national educational institutions in plastic partition resource circulation activities.

Furthermore, CJ Freshway has contributed to environmental protection in local communities through paper-based resource circulation activities. Since 2021, it has been conducting education on eco-friendly practices in daily life, such as proper separation and disposal of paper milk cartons, targeting children at daycare centers, which are its food distribution clients. Since last year, it has expanded its activities to the local community by participating in Hwaseong City's paper pack resource circulation campaign, "Dadaikpack." Also, since 2021, CJ Freshway has partnered with the social enterprise "Lovely Paper" to provide paper rice sacks discarded from group catering facilities to be made into bags. To date, more than 13,000 paper rice sacks provided by CJ Freshway have been made into and sold as approximately 10,000 bags.
