Gyeongbuk Province Creates 8 Millennium Architecture Pilot Villages ... Complex Spaces for Jobs, Culture, and Education

Gyeongbuk Province has planned the ‘Millennium Architecture Pilot Village Development Project’ to realize architecture aimed at a thousand years, and after conducting a demand survey in cities and counties, selected 8 projects in 8 locations across 8 cities and counties.


The Millennium Architecture Pilot Village Development Project is a key initiative of Gyeongbuk Province that establishes the basic concept through the ‘Basic Plan Establishment Service for Realizing Architecture Aimed at a Thousand Years’ and aims to create a sustainable, future-oriented living space that can only be implemented locally and promotes regional coexistence.

Through the Millennium Architecture Pilot Village Development Project, the goal is to create local residential complexes that combine life, jobs, culture, and education, and to build creative millennium residential complexes with cultural value to be passed down to future generations, like Yangdong Village in Gyeongju and Hahoe Village in Andong.


With the advent of the full-scale retirement period of baby boomers and the startup of young farmers, active measures for influx are necessary, and to prepare residential conditions for migration to rural areas, residential complexes will be planned in accordance with regional status and socio-economic and cultural circumstances, such as production community type, complex retirement village, and industry-linked type.


As a result of the demand survey in cities and counties, 25 sites were submitted from 13 cities and counties. Among them, 8 projects were selected through evaluation based on criteria such as planning direction, architecture and eco-friendly technology, operation and programs, public services and support, and consultation and review by the Millennium Architecture Advisory Committee.


The selected projects are: ① Youth Housing and Complex Retirement Village in Donghae-myeon, Pohang City ② Complex Resort-type Retirement Village in Cheongundong, Gyeongju City ③ Complex Retirement Village linked with public institutions in the Innovation City, Nongsomyeon, Gimcheon City ④ Campus Innovation Park-linked project at Kumoh National Institute of Technology, Yangho-dong, Gumi City ⑤ Artist Village near filming locations in Maseong-myeon, Mungyeong City ⑥ Artist Village near downtown Baekcheon-dong, Gyeongsan City ⑦ Win-win Village linked with nearby industrial complex in Dasan-myeon, Goryeong County ⑧ Living SOC development linked with nearby metropolitan area in Seonnam-myeon, Seongju County.


Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk Province, expressed his ambition, saying, “We will collaborate with cities and counties in the future and directly carry out architectural planning services at the provincial level to successfully promote this project and create Millennium Architecture Pilot Villages representing Gyeongbuk Province in each city and county.”
