Goseong County in Gyeongnam initiated a new change on the 15th with the adoption procedure for abandoned animals managed by public institutions, concluding the adoption by the county office and the county council in front of the temporary animal protection center within the Goseong County Agricultural Technology Center.
About 20 officials, including County Governor Lee Sang-geun and Goseong County Council Chairman Choi Eul-seok, attended the adoption ceremony, and after the event, the adopted animals were handed over to the county office and the council.
Goseong County in Gyeongnam has begun a new change by completing the adoption of abandoned animals through the county office and the county council.
In the era of 15 million pet owners, the number of abandoned animals is increasing along with the growing number of pet owners and pets.
Every local government struggles with issues caused by abandoned animals and is coming up with various solutions. Amid this, Goseong County sought innovation in the paradigm of animal adoption.
Goseong County shifted from a passive attitude of waiting for visitors to the abandoned animal protection center to actively seeking adopters.
This initiative started from a remark made by Governor Lee at an executive meeting in February.
Governor Lee said, “Adoption of abandoned animals is not the responsibility of a single department. It is a matter that requires the attention of the entire Goseong County administration,” and proposed, “By having 20 departments including the main office, council, affiliated institutions, and business offices directly adopt animals, we can not only raise public officials’ interest but also enhance administrative credibility by showing officials actively taking part.”
Following this, after the relevant departments planned and completed procedures such as neutering the adopted animals, on the 7th and 8th, a total of 36 animals were adopted from 18 locations including the health center, business offices, and town and township offices, two animals each. With the adoption by the county office and the county council on this day, a total of 40 animals were adopted.
The dogs adopted by the county office were named ‘Saeromi’ and ‘Himchani’, the county council’s dogs were named ‘Mideumi’ and ‘Huimangi’, and the health center’s dogs were named ‘Geoni’ and ‘Gangi’.
The names were given according to the characteristics of each department. In addition to neutering surgery, fences will be installed near the dedicated houses if there is a need to separate the space from the outside.
Governor Lee said, “I hope that this adoption will change the residents’ perception of abandoned animals and that these animals will find new lives with good owners.”
