Police Promote Children's Traffic Safety Measures for New School Term

The National Police Agency announced that it will implement child traffic safety measures for two months starting from the 27th, coinciding with the first new school term after the lifting of social distancing.

During this period, the police plan to focus traffic officers on areas with high accident risks, such as crosswalks without traffic signals near schools during school commute hours. They will also conduct intensive crackdowns on vehicles violating stop rules at signal-less crosswalks within school zones, a measure that was implemented last year.

Additionally, the police will conduct a comprehensive inspection of outdated or damaged traffic safety facilities within school zones and will repair facilities that can be immediately addressed. They also plan to improve or supplement related facilities, such as designating one-way streets on school routes where sidewalks are not installed.

The National Police Agency will form a joint inspection team with related ministries to provide education to facility managers operating children's school buses and to check compliance with regulations. They will also intensively crack down on driving without a guardian accompanying the child and plan to resume child traffic safety campaigns that were suspended during the social distancing period.

A National Police Agency official stated, "We plan to strengthen proactive prevention, inspections, education, and enforcement to create a traffic environment where our children can safely commute to schools that have returned to normalcy after COVID-19."
