After the Wedding, the Couple Grows Distant
Majority Opinion: "The Protagonist Should Stand Out"
The so-called 'troublesome guest,' who steals the spotlight with an outfit as flashy as the bride?the main figure of the wedding ceremony?has become a subject of debate in the United States as well.
According to The Independent and others on the 21st (local time), a woman named Jasmine Hooper posted a video on her TikTok account on the 7th, complaining that "my mother-in-law wore a white dress to my wedding."
In the photo shared by Hooper, two women wearing white dresses stand on either side of the groom. The two women not only wore similar colors but also had similar decorations on their outfits. At a glance, it is confusing to tell which one is the bride.
Hooper said, "I can't express how embarrassed I was," adding, "(My mother-in-law) ruined my entire wedding."
Hooper's husband was just as upset as she was after seeing his mother's outfit, and it was reported that the couple became estranged from the mother-in-law after the wedding. Nine months after the wedding, the Hooper couple resumed contact with the mother-in-law, but Hooper said she became angry again when the mother-in-law sent her a Christmas card with a wedding photo attached.
The so-called 'troublesome guest look' caused a rift even between the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law.
The video Hooper posted became a hot topic, garnering 11 million views. Netizens both domestic and abroad criticized the mother-in-law, saying things like "There was no consideration," and "She seems unable to let go of her son." Some viewed it as "just a funny incident" or said, "The idea that the bride should be the 'flower of the wedding' is outdated," but most sympathized with Hooper's position. Some netizens even said they specified a 'dress code' for guests at their own weddings.
Meanwhile, the 'proper guest look' is also an interesting topic in Korea. The prevailing opinion is to avoid white or white-toned clothing, which is the color of the bride's wedding dress, and not to dress more conspicuously than the bride. Those who break this unwritten rule are labeled as 'troublesome guests.' Because of this, many communities often post questions like "Would this outfit be considered a troublesome guest look?" There are even many people who have special clothes just for weddings.
In fact, according to a survey on wedding attendance etiquette by the matchmaking company Duo, unmarried men and women pay the most attention to 'clothing (42.9%)' when attending weddings. Among them, the 'troublesome guest' most frequently chosen by unmarried men and women was 'people who wore white dresses (25.5%).'
The main reason for paying attention to wedding etiquette was "because it is the proper thing to do (48.4%)," followed by "because I want the acquaintance to have a happy wedding (22.9%)."
