[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] Han Sang-hyuk, Chairman of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC), who is facing pressure to resign voluntarily ahead of the expiration of his term in July next year, expressed his intention to complete his term on the 14th.

At a year-end press briefing held at the Government Complex Gwacheon, Chairman Han reflected on the achievements and work direction during his term as the 5th KCC Chairman, saying, "One of the directions of the 5th KCC was to change and rationalize regulations that did not fit well." Han Sang-hyuk's term runs until July 2023.

He added, "Even if it is a very small inconvenience felt by the public, I felt that promptly resolving it is the direction the media regulatory agency, the KCC, should take," and "I also tried to attend events such as the opening ceremony of community radio broadcasts and events for people with disabilities whenever possible."

He continued, "I don't know if I have done a lot, but I worked hard," and "I think that reflecting on achievements and listening to voices during the remaining period of the 5th term is what should be done during this turbulent time."

Chairman Han's remarks are interpreted as a reiteration of his intention not to step down amid resignation pressures from the ruling party. Park Sung-joong, the senior member of the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee from the People Power Party, urged Han Sang-hyuk to resign voluntarily, citing that as a former government official, his governance philosophy does not align with President Yoon Suk-yeol's. In response, Chairman Han has repeatedly stated that he will not resign prematurely.

Meanwhile, Ahn Hyung-hwan, Vice Chairman recommended by the ruling People Power Party, said at the briefing, "The KCC did not show a vibrant appearance this year," and "Next year, we will show a more dynamic image in line with government policies."
