'2023 Asia Table Tennis Championships' Host Confirmed as Pyeongchang '2022 Asian Table Tennis Union General Assembly' held in Bangkok, Thailand on the 18th [Pyeongchang-gun]

[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon Province announced on the 25th that "Pyeongchang-gun was confirmed as the host city for the 2023 Asian Table Tennis Championships at the '2022 Asian Table Tennis Union General Assembly' held in Bangkok, Thailand on the 18th."

The host country was confirmed as South Korea based on the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU) Executive Committee meeting (Doha, Qatar, March 29-30) and the bidding results for hosting the 2023 Asian Table Tennis Championships, with Pyeongchang-gun ultimately selected as the domestic host city.

According to the Korea Table Tennis Association and Pyeongchang-gun, the Asian Table Tennis Championships will be held at the Pyeongchang Dome from September 3 to September 10 next year, with about 500 officials and players from more than 30 countries participating, making it the largest single-sport event.

Top-ranked players from China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, and Taiwan will compete in seven events including men's and women's singles and doubles, men's and women's team events, and mixed doubles.

The 2023 Asian Table Tennis Championships will allocate one team event (two individual spots) and one mixed doubles spot for the 2024 Paris Olympics, as well as ten spots each for men’s and women’s teams for the 2024 Busan World Table Tennis Championships (team event).

National associations are expected to send many of the world’s top-ranked players to secure early qualification spots for the Olympics and World Championships.

The Asian Table Tennis Championships were first held in Singapore in 1952. In South Korea, it has been hosted four times: the 7th edition in Seoul in 1967, the 17th edition in Jeju Island in 2005, in Busan in 2013, and now the fourth time in Pyeongchang-gun.

Shim Jae-guk, the mayor of Pyeongchang-gun, expressed expectations that the participation of world-class players will maximize the 'Happy700 Pyeongchang' brand image and greatly contribute to revitalizing the local economy through accommodation and tourism by attracting table tennis enthusiasts from home and abroad.

Mayor Shim said, "I would like to thank Yoo Seung-min, IOC member and president of the Korea Table Tennis Association, and the bidding team for their hard work in securing this event, and we will strive to make it a successful tournament."
