[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] The prosecution has requested a 10-year prison sentence for a man in his 30s accused of wielding a weapon against his actress wife.
The Criminal Division 11 of the Seoul Western District Court (Presiding Judge Moon Byungchan) held a trial on the 12th for Mr. Lee, a man in his 30s who was detained and indicted on charges of attempted murder. The defendant was also questioned during the trial.
The prosecution stated, “Mr. Lee attempted to kill the defenseless victim, who was with their daughter during the dispute, and he neither shows remorse nor admits to the crime,” and requested a 10-year prison sentence from the court.
In his final statement, Lee’s defense attorney said, “The defendant apologizes for injuring the victim and is remorseful and repentant,” but also argued, “However, the defendant insists that he did not intend to kill the victim.”
Lee himself said, “I am a victim of domestic violence,” and added, “The victim often cheated and was not faithful to the family, and even tormented the child.” Nevertheless, he stated, “Although my actions are unforgivable, I swear to heaven that I never had the intention to kill the victim.”
He continued, “I just want to get out of this case quickly and hope for only good things in the rest of my life,” and added, “It is hard to say, but I loved you very much. I am even more sorry because you were too good for me.”
Lee is accused of stabbing his wife, a woman in her 40s and an actress, Ms. A, in front of their home in Itaewon-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, at around 8:40 a.m. on June 14. Ms. A was taken to a nearby hospital but her life was not in danger.
The sentencing for Lee is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on the 9th of next month.
