[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] President Yoon Suk-yeol's approval rating for his administration dropped to its lowest level since taking office, following a controversy over his use of vulgar language during a recent tour. President Yoon's approval rating matched the previous low of 24% recorded in the first week of August.


According to Gallup's regular survey conducted from the 27th to the 29th (a telephone interview survey of 1,000 adults aged 18 and over nationwide), President Yoon's approval rating stood at 24%, while disapproval reached 65%. The 24% approval rating represents a 4 percentage point decline compared to last week, tying the lowest level recorded in the first week of August. The disapproval rating of 65% increased by 4 percentage points from the previous week.

By political orientation, 49% of conservatives, 18% of moderates, and only 6% of progressives gave positive evaluations of the administration's performance. Except for Jeju Island, which was excluded due to a small number of respondents, negative evaluations outnumbered positive ones in all regions. By generation, only those in their 70s showed a positive evaluation at 46%, surpassing the negative evaluation of 34%; all other age groups showed higher negative evaluations. Notably, among those in their 20s (ages 18-29), only 9% gave a positive evaluation.


Those who evaluated the job performance positively cited reasons such as "diplomacy" (8%), "hardworking/doing their best," "overall good performance" (both 7%), "overcoming the previous administration" (6%), and "fairness/justice/principle," "for the people," "truthfulness/honesty/no lies" (all 4%).


On the other hand, respondents who evaluated negatively mentioned reasons including "diplomacy" (17%), "lack of experience/qualifications/incompetence" (13%), "careless remarks" (8%), "not caring about the economy/livelihood" (7%), "overall poor performance," "dishonesty/lack of trust" (both 6%), "poor communication," and "personnel matters" (both 5%). Gallup explained, "This week, mentions related to diplomacy and the controversy over vulgar language stood out among the reasons for negative evaluations."
