[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] Twenty world-renowned scholars in the field of ‘Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ are gathering at KAIST to discuss issues related to ‘Asian Innovation and Entrepreneurship.’

The Institute for Strategy and Policy on Innovation (ISPI) at KAIST announced on the 10th that it will jointly host the 10th Innovation and Entrepreneurship Seminar with the Asian Innovation and Entrepreneurship Association (AIEA) and the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) from the 11th to the 13th.

This conference will present and discuss the latest research focusing on ‘Innovation and Entrepreneurship,’ which are key to economic growth and job creation, including ▲technology-based innovation models for companies in an era of low growth ▲startup ecosystem models for sustainable economic structures ▲new paradigms of the entrepreneurial environment and economic growth.

From a social and policy perspective, the seminar will revisit issues such as low growth and social polarization currently faced by Korean society together with scholars. The seminar is expected to make significant contributions to policy measures that promote a Korean-style entrepreneurship capable of creating new added value and jobs in the digital era, moving beyond the current large-corporation-centered industrial structure of the Korean economy.

Additionally, by examining innovation actors not only from the perspective of companies but also universities and governments, the seminar is expected to propose policy directions for a desirable innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem structure.

The first session of the seminar, ‘Entrepreneurship and Innovation,’ will feature presentations by Professor Fred Bereskin of the University of Missouri on ‘Exploring Branding and Innovation Market Value,’ Professor Hongki Lee of the University of New Hampshire on ‘The Value and Capability of Invention and Advantages of Large Corporations,’ and Professor Hyunju Jung of KAIST on ‘The Trade-Off Relationship Between Academic Patents and Publications.’ Professors Scott Stern of MIT Sloan School of Management, Jeff Furman of Boston University, and Hsiao-Hui Lee of National Chengchi University in Taiwan will participate as discussants.

Notably, Professor Wonjun Kim of KAIST’s Department of Technology Management, who co-chairs the seminar with Professor Scott Stern, is a leading scholar guiding research directions in innovation and entrepreneurship in the United States, while Professor Jeff Furman is a distinguished scholar researching the relationship between AI and innovation.

The second session, ‘AI, Robotics, and Innovation,’ will include presentations by Professor Matt Marx of Cornell University on ‘Treasures in the Attic’ and Professor Seonwoo Hwang of Korea University on ‘Temporary Employment and Innovation.’ Professors John Walsh of Georgia Tech and Po-Hsuan Hsu of Tsinghua University in China will participate as discussants.

The third session, ‘New Innovation Challenge Models,’ will feature presentations by Professor Elvira Sojli of the University of New South Wales (UNSW) on ‘Advanced Manufacturing and Process Innovation Measurement’ and Philipp B?nig, a researcher at the Leibniz Research Centre of the European Institute, on ‘Abuse of R&D Subsidies.’ Professors Hyo Kang of the University of Southern California and Matt Marx of Cornell University will serve as discussants.

The final session, ‘Innovation and Knowledge Production,’ will include presentations by Professor Matthias Qian of Sa?d Business School, University of Oxford, on ‘Knowledge Similarity Between Founders and Participants’ and Professor Suting Hong of Shanghai University of Science and Technology on ‘When Research-Oriented Entrepreneurs’ Ventures Achieve Performance.’ Professors Chuck Eesley of Stanford University and Yongwook Baek of KAIST will serve as discussants.

Professor Wonjun Kim, director of the KAIST Institute for Strategy and Policy on Innovation and host of this conference, said, “This conference will be a valuable opportunity to understand international trends in innovation and entrepreneurship,” adding, “In particular, it will present alternatives on how artificial intelligence and machine learning can revitalize innovation and entrepreneurship.”
