Volunteer Activities to Address Blind Spots in Dementia Treatment and Prevention
[Jindo=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-kyung] The Jindo County Public Health Center in Jeollanam-do has been actively conducting volunteer activities since last month by recruiting volunteers who have completed dementia partner training to assist elderly dementia patients.
Five volunteers were appointed as ‘Danbees’ and are serving as helpers in various programs under the theme ‘My Precious Memories’ for dementia patients, including ▲cognitive enhancement at dementia patient shelters ▲visiting dementia prevention classes.
‘Danbees’ refers to the mascot of dementia partners, the honeybee (Danbi), symbolizing the symbiotic relationship between bees and flowers, representing support for dementia patients and their families.
The Jindo County Public Health Center Dementia Safety Center planned this volunteer activity to ▲improve negative perceptions of dementia ▲spread a culture of care ▲create a dementia-friendly environment.
The volunteers said, “Through this volunteer work, our perspectives on the elderly and negative thoughts about dementia have changed a lot,” and “We will continue to participate in promoting dementia awareness in the future.”
A representative from the Jindo County Public Health Center stated, “When physical activity decreases, cognitive decline naturally progresses as well,” and added, “We plan to expand volunteer activities that provide companionship and cognitive support to elderly people with mobility difficulties.”
Meanwhile, inquiries about dementia partner training completion and volunteer activities at the Dementia Safety Center can be made to the Jindo County Dementia Safety Center and the Dementia Counseling Call Center.
