[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yeo Jong-gu] Yeongcheon City in Gyeongbuk achieved first place nationwide in the '2021 Traffic Culture Index Survey' and received the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award at the Korea Transportation Safety Authority awards ceremony.
The Traffic Culture Index is an indicator created by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority every year for 229 basic local governments nationwide, based on population, measuring residents' ▲driving behavior ▲walking behavior ▲traffic safety items through observation, surveys, and literature reviews to quantify awareness levels.
Yeongcheon City ranked first in walking behavior and third in traffic safety indicators, earning first place among cities with populations under 300,000 (49 cities).
The factors contributing to this ranking improvement include securing and executing government budgets for projects such as the Safe Speed 5030 Facility Improvement Project, Child Protection Zone improvements, and the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) construction project.
Additionally, the joint public-private-police traffic safety campaigns and education significantly raised citizens' awareness of traffic culture, greatly contributing to the rise in ranking.
Mayor Choi Ki-moon said, “Receiving the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award for the Traffic Culture Index is the fruit of traffic safety efforts achieved through the joint efforts of Yeongcheon City and its citizens. Going forward, the city will continue to strive to establish an advanced traffic culture for its citizens.”
