Jeju Samdasoo Wins Prime Minister's Award at the '2022 Korea Packaging Exhibition'

Honored with the Highest Award for Packaging Using Chemically Recycled PET (CR-PET)

[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Jeju Samdasoo announced on the 26th that it won the Prime Minister's Award at the ‘16th Korea Packaging Exhibition: Korea Star Awards 2022’ hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The ‘Korea Packaging Exhibition’ is the most prestigious packaging awards ceremony in Korea hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, given to companies and products that have contributed to the development of the packaging industry and enhancement of technological competitiveness. Jeju Development Corporation received the highest honor in the corporate category for ‘Jeju Samdasoo RE:Born,’ which applies chemically recycled PET (CR-PET).

Jeju Samdasoo RE:Born is a product that uses recycled PET (CR-PET) made from PET chips produced by chemically decomposing separately collected transparent PET bottles. CR-PET is a ‘bottle-to-bottle’ form (reusing PET bottles as PET bottles) that is attracting attention as a complete resource circulation form of PET bottles because it can maintain safety as a food contact container even after repeated recycling.

Jeju Development Corporation developed this packaging in collaboration with eco-friendly material company SK Chemicals. The prototype was analyzed by accredited domestic and international institutions for compliance with domestic Ministry of Environment and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) water quality standards and container elution standards, and it passed all management criteria.

Additionally, under the current Food Sanitation Act, it can be used immediately as a food container, making commercialization possible as soon as a mass supply system for raw materials is established. Jeju Development Corporation used Jeju Samdasoo RE:Born produced in February to improve public awareness of recycled PET.

Kim Jeong-hak, President of Jeju Development Corporation, said, “We are focusing on developing eco-friendly packaging centered on the R&D Innovation Center so that customers can drink Jeju Samdasoo without environmental burden,” and added, “As a company producing and selling Korea’s representative bottled water, we will take the lead in enhancing customers’ trust in recycled PET along with product development.”
