US-ASEAN Summit to Be Held on July 12-13... Focus on Countering China

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] U.S. President Joe Biden will hold a special summit with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries in Washington DC for two days starting from the 12th of next month.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki stated in a press release on the 16th (local time), "This summit demonstrates the United States' continued commitment to ASEAN countries, including ASEAN's key role in addressing major regional challenges."

Previously, President Biden was scheduled to hold a special summit with ASEAN member countries for two days starting from the 28th of last month, but it was postponed due to circumstances in some member countries.

Press Secretary Psaki said, "Contributing as a strong and reliable partner in Southeast Asia is a top priority for the Biden administration," adding, "The shared aspiration for a free and secure Indo-Pacific region will continue."

In particular, President Biden is expected to focus on strengthening checks on China during this summit and discuss responses to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
