Hampyeong Drive-In Theater 'Gaining Popularity' Surpasses 7,500 Cars in 7 Months Since Opening

[Hampyeong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Hampyeong Drive-in Theater has rapidly emerged as a cultural hotspot in the 'With Corona' era, surpassing a cumulative total of 7,500 vehicles in attendance just over seven months since its opening.

This is attributed to its advantage as a cultural facility where safe social distancing is possible during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hampyeong County in Jeollanam-do announced on the 5th that since the opening of the Hampyeong Drive-in Theater, equipped with the nation's best facilities, on January 29, a total of 7,500 vehicles have visited.

Analysis of the number of vehicles entering the Hampyeong Drive-in Theater and revenue status showed that on July 24, the daily number of vehicles reached 150, the highest record since the theater's opening, and just a week later on July 31, 189 vehicles visited in one day, setting a new daily attendance record.

Regarding this, the revenue from ticket sales at the drive-in theater totaled 148.68 million KRW, proving to be a significant contributor to the local economy.

Since February 19, analysis of visitors by region showed that Mokpo accounted for the largest number with 1,858 vehicles (28%), followed by Hampyeong with 1,711 vehicles (26%), and Gwangju with 1,499 vehicles (23%). Visitors also came from Naju, Yeonggwang, Muan, and other areas.

It is understood that not only residents of Hampyeong County, who had difficulty watching movies since the local theater closed in 1992, but also people from nearby regions who found drive-in theaters in Gwangju and Yeosu too far, are flocking to the Hampyeong Drive-in Theater.

County Governor Lee Sang-ik emphasized, “Although COVID-19 continues to spread nationwide, you can safely watch movies at the Hampyeong Drive-in Theater,” adding, “We hope families and friends come to the Hampyeong Drive-in Theater, where you can watch movies and eat inside your car, to enjoy a summer outing.”

Meanwhile, the Hampyeong Drive-in Theater, which opened in January at the Expo Park Hwangso Parking Lot area, is equipped with two screening rooms (Nabi Hall and Hwanggeumbakjwi Hall) and a concession stand, and shows new releases daily (closed every Monday) from 7:50 PM until midnight.
