[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyungsoo] Coupang has secured the online broadcasting rights for the Tokyo Olympics, surpassing online platforms such as Naver and Kakao.
According to industry sources on the 20th, Coupang will exclusively broadcast the Tokyo Olympics, which opens on the 23rd of next month, online through its own online video service (OTT) platform, Coupang Play.
To broadcast Olympic games on online platforms, broadcasting rights must be purchased from the three major domestic terrestrial broadcasters. It is known that Coupang, Naver, and Kakao competed for the broadcasting rights. The price for the Tokyo Olympics online broadcasting rights has not been disclosed.
Coupang launched Coupang Play in December last year for its paid membership service called ‘Rocket Wow.’ It is available for a monthly subscription fee of 2,900 KRW.
Coupang Play has broadcast sports events starting with the South Korea national football team match in March, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) '2021 Women's Volleyball Nations League' (VNL) in May, and the second round of the World Cup Asian qualifiers in June.
